Calls for ambitious climate action resonate in cities across the world. Talk of a “Green New Deal” south of the border has been getting a lot of attention. More and more global campaigns, major reports and manifestos are demanding bold measures and structural change.
Greens worldwide have been calling for substantive action for years, but what does this look like for local residents? It’s time to support a Green plan to transform our cities and urban spaces by fighting climate change, generating economic prosperity, fostering social equity and protecting the well-being of future generations.
Join us for a town-hall with GPO leader and MPP for Guelph, Mike Schreiner, that explores how a made-in-Canada plan for bold, comprehensive #ClimateAction is our chance to transform the city we call home into a more liveable, equitable and enjoyable place to live.
Housing. Transit. Food Security. Economic prosperity. Let’s consider City Building through the lense of Climate Action.
Toronto Centre Greens invite GTA residents to an exciting event featuring Mike Schreiner. Mike is the leader of the Green Party of Ontario as well as Ontario’s first Green MPP, serving constituents in the riding of Guelph. Members of the public are invited to ask questions and partake in the discussion!
Doors will open at 7:45pm and the Townhall segment with Mike will begin at 8pm. The chat will begin with a Q&A moderated by former Toronto Centre candidate, Adam Sommerfeld, and co-host of Democracy365: A Green Podcast, Steven Hobé. And the floor will be opened up to questions from the public. The talk will also be made available online as a special episode of Democracy365.
The federal Annual General Meeting of the Toronto Centre Green Party of Canada Association will be held immediately after the chat at 9:15pm where we will elect a new executive in accordance with Elections Canada rules. Local Toronto Centre members are invited to elect a new Electoral Disctrict Association (EDA) executive and help plan initiatives for the next year.
Some further reading about different iterations and the history of a "Green New Deal"
The expression "Green New Deal" was popularized by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman beginning in 2007, according to the Huffington Post / Grist. The Guardian and Vox also provide some further context on the evolution of this concept in the United States and Europe.
Notably, the 2009 campaign by the European Green Party also included a "Green New Deal for Europe"
A Wuppertal Institute report published by the Green European Foundation further detailed the plan.
The idea has also received some traction in Canadian media of late.
